This is my "Time Capsule" tribute to the radio station that inspired me to become a Disc Jockey! (DJ SHAWN) WYHY Lebanon, Nashville (Y-107 FM) |
As long as I can remember growing up in Nashville Tennessee, WYHY Lebanon, Nashville,Y-107 was my favorite radio station of all time! You never knew what you were going to hear next, maybe dead air, a cuss word or two, or most of all your favorite song! The Dj's that made Y-107 what it was were always funny and really did have a good time on the air! The station was dubbed the "Outrageous FM" and that was what set them apart from the rest, they didnt seem to play by the boring rules of modern day radio! They would play and say what they wanted most often when they wanted. You could actually call the request line and get a song played, unless of course the song sucked, then the Dj's would make a big joke out of it and probably you too, but it was all in good fun! No other stations in Nashville could even come close to the sound of Y-107! They ruled the airwaves!
The DJ's that made Y-107 were: Gary Jeff Walker (Friday 5 o'clock Whistle Party), Rhett Walker, Coyote McCloud and the Zoo Crew, Diana Lynn, Hawk Harrison and little brother Gator Harrison, Bumper Morgan (for the crazy, funny jingles between songs), J. Karen, Hollywood Hendrix, John Rock-n-Roll Smelly, Tom Peace, Spiderman, Rick 'OShay, Deacon Dave, Jimmy B, Danny and Brian, Lisa Manning, Scooter, Dana Knight, Tim Dukes, Tom Steele, Mark Chase, The Friday Night Music City Mix Factory with Wild Man Walter Web, Eric Page (The Pager), Krash Kelly and Buck Naked Traffic!
For those of you that remember the days of Y-107 know what I mean when I say, "That was the good old days of Real Radio!" I used to dream about one day becoming a DJ on Y-107 but sometimes life has other plans. I love my job as a nightclub DJ and have been doing it now for about 10 years. But I still feel that if I ever get the chance to DJ on the air I really hope it is a station like, The Outrageous FM, Y-107!
I remember the first time I went to the Y-107 studio to meet Gary Jeff Walker on the Friday 5 o'clock Whistle Party, he was kicked back with a beer in one hand, a cigarette in the other and a big fat boom mic in his face Rocking the 100,000 watt air waves! I couldnt help but think, "Daaaaaaaaaamn, this is the life!" He even welcomed me as an in studio guest and let me say a few lines on the air! Needless to say I was nervous as hell! But it was a really cool feeling knowing my voice was being transmitted over a 150-mile radius of Nashville on a big fat 1000-foot tall antenna! The energy rush of live broadcast really got me excited about Dj'ing to a live crowd and wanting to entertain people with music. Thanks Gary Jeff Walker!!!
The station was bought out by a big corporate broadcasting company that owns something like 5 stations on the FM dial and is now called 107.5 The River. I still listen from time to time but it's just not the same anymore with all the corporate big wigs and the recording industry controlling the DJ's and the music. I miss the days when radio was about music and entertainment, and not all about money and ratings. Y-107 will be missed by thousands, but at least we had the best while we were still young enough to care:-)

:: BONUS :: Here's one for the Hermitage Plaza Cruisers of the late 80's! All you needed was a razor knife, a Y-107 sticker and a skilled hand and you could proudly be known as a "HO" to everybody that saw this Y-107 sticker hack on the tinted back window of your car or truck! Some people got even more creative and were able to cut the sticker just right so it would say "YO HO"! as in "YO, Waaazzup you HO!!!" LOL.... Once this caught on around town every one started doing this to look cool and be different. We even started a cruising clan called the HO PATROL!! LOL... Aaaahhh, the good old days of the late 80's! :-) Cruising around town all night blasting Y-107 threw your booming shake the concrete car stereo while you skillfully hunted for the next party and or wild girl for the night!
